Roots closes the season by exploring the stories, cultures, and landscapes that connect us to the world around us. From Indigenous storytelling to a new concerto and Beethoven’s celebration of nature, the program asks us to consider where we come from and the places and traditions that shape us.

Jerod Impichchaachaaha’ Tate — Spirit Chief Names the Animal People

Tate’s Spirit Chief Names the Animal People draws upon a traditional Chickasaw creation story in which the animals gather to receive their names. Tate brings Indigenous storytelling and classical music together in a work grounded in culture, community, and the enduring power of story.

Juan Pablo Contreras — La Minerva

Featuring Pala Garcia, violinist• Premiere

Pala Garcia joins NOCCO for La Minerva by Mexican composer Juan Pablo Contreras. Contreras brings classical traditions into conversation with the musical culture of Mexico, creating a vibrant contemporary voice and an exciting centerpiece for Roots.

Ludwig van Beethoven — Symphony No. 6 in F major, Op. 68, “Pastoral”

Beethoven’s beloved Pastoral Symphony brings Roots and the season to a close with a celebration of the natural world. Flowing streams, birdsong, a gathering in the countryside, and a dramatic thunderstorm emerge from the orchestra before the symphony arrives at a joyful expression of gratitude after the storm.
